Smuggled Gold Appeal Questions Lack of Refineries in Maldives
A Sri Lankan man serving a one-year prison sentence for smuggling two kilograms of gold has asked the High Court to free him and return his confiscated bullion within seven days. In his appeal, the convict—who is married to a Maldivian—argued that lower courts committed a fundamental error by declaring the seized item to be gold despite the total absence of gold-refine capabilities in the Maldives.
