Jets Surge as Commercial Flights Drop

Middle East conflicts disrupted major airline routes this year, causing scheduled commercial flights to the Maldives to plummet. However, private travel bucked the trend. While scheduled flights dropped significantly in the first six months, private jets and charter flights surged from 719 to 1,041 arrivals. The airspace closures in the Gulf ultimately impacted overall tourist numbers, which fell from 1.11 million to 1.05 million.

Middle East Conflict Drives Down Maldives Tourist Arrivals as Private Jets Buck the Trend

Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have directly impacted the Maldivian tourism sector, driving down both commercial flight movements and overall tourist arrivals during the first half of the year. However, in a striking contrast to the decline in commercial airline traffic, the arrival of private jets and charter flights has seen a significant increase.

Statistics released by the Maldives Monetary Authority reveal that total international flight movements to the country dropped by 4.7 percent in the first six months of the year. The country recorded 8,393 flights during this period, down from the 8,807 flights logged in the same period last year. This decline was primarily caused by a sharp reduction in scheduled flights, which fell from 8,088 to 7,352.

The downturn is directly linked to the geopolitical unrest in the Middle East that escalated in late February. As the conflict forced the closure of airspaces across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other Gulf nations, major Middle Eastern carriers, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Flydubai, were forced to cancel numerous flights. Because a vast majority of tourists travelling to the Maldives transit through Abu Dhabi or Dubai, these cancellations created a significant bottleneck for incoming travellers.

Consequently, the drop in commercial aviation capacity led to a corresponding decline in visitor numbers. Tourist arrivals for the first half of the year stood at 1.05 million, a noticeable decrease from the 1.11 million tourists who visited during the corresponding period last year. According to the central bank's data, these visitors spent an average of one week in the country.

Despite the broader downturn in scheduled travel, the luxury and private aviation segments showed strong resilience. The Maldives recorded an influx of 1,041 private jets and charter flights in the first six months of the year, marking a substantial rise from the 719 arrivals recorded during the same timeframe last year.
