The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has declared it will accept no alternative to Majeedhee Magu for its upcoming "Dhatihvejje" protest, rejecting outer-road locations as ineffectual for voicing concerns over the country's economic downturn.

Scheduled to commence at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday outside the Social Centre, the demonstration aims to address the soaring prices of goods and the escalating dollar exchange rate. The event was initially slated for Wednesday before being postponed to Thursday, though the party did not publicly state a reason for the delay.

Following discussions with the Maldives Police Service, the MDP publicly insisted that the protest must proceed directly down Majeedhee Magu, the capital's primary commercial artery. The party highlighted that police had obstructed three previous attempts to rally on the street, but maintained they would not relocate to another area this time. While official police authorization remains pending, MDP representatives claimed they received a positive indication regarding their proposed route.

Senior MDP activist Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the serious nature of the event, drawing a sharp contrast with celebratory gatherings. "We are not trying to hold an anniversary walk. Nor a fancy parade, we are trying to hold a protest," Anwar stated, asserting their intention to make the public's grievances heard. He argued that protesting on the city's outer ring roads isolates the message, ensuring only the participants themselves hear it, whereas Majeedhee Magu guarantees maximum visibility to the wider public.

The "Dhatihvejje" (Things have become tight) rally marks a significant push by the MDP following a recent period of slowed political activity, with the party actively appealing for mass public participation to amplify their economic concerns.
