Intensive Search Enters Third Day for Rescuers and Captain Missing in Cargo Vessel Sinking
Search and rescue teams scanning over 6,280 square nautical miles of ocean by air and sea have found no trace of a military officer, a police officer, and a vessel captain who vanished three days ago while attempting to rescue crew members from a sinking cargo ship. The Maldives National Defence Force confirmed that extensive operations continue across surrounding waters, but the missing men remain unaccounted for following the maritime disaster.
The missing individuals have been identified as 39-year-old Maldives National Defence Force Staff Sergeant Ibrahim Ahmed, 33-year-old Police Sergeant Ali Nafiu from N. Manadhoo, and 35-year-old vessel captain Mohamed Hamdhoon from Th. Madifushi. The three disappeared while providing emergency assistance to crew members aboard the supply vessel "Friend 4", which began taking on water and sank during a voyage to Huvadhu Atoll after loading stones and sand aggregate at Thilafushi. While seven of the eight people aboard the vessel were successfully rescued, the captain and the two responding officers were lost at sea.
According to operational updates from the Maldives National Defence Force, aerial surveillance teams have covered 5,212 square nautical miles, while coastguard vessels have searched 1,070.10 square nautical miles of ocean. The airborne search effort utilizes military unmanned aerial vehicles alongside a passenger aircraft operated by national airline Maldivian to scan vast sections of the maritime zone.
The disappearance of the two security officers and the vessel captain has sparked widespread concern across the country, with social media platforms filling with messages and prayers for their safe return. Citing an increase in dangerous maritime incidents in recent days, relevant authorities have reiterated appeals for all sea travelers to monitor weather forecasts closely and ensure their vessels are equipped with complete safety gear.
